20th Anniversary of the Marie-Sklodowska Curie Actions programme
As most of you will be aware, Horizon 2020, the current Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, has reached the mid-point of its 7-year funding cycle and is in the process of being evaluated to improve the final few years of calls. The White Rose Brussels Office will be leading on a joint submission from the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York, to the interim evaluation.

Climate change, IKnowFood and a new network in Brussels
We held the first event of our White Rose series of seminars on the 11th October in the European Parliament. The meeting was entitled “Sustainable solutions for Europe: Meeting the challenges of air quality and climate” and as speakers for the event, we had three eminent scientists from the three universities.

Brexit and Two Visitors to the Office
For two months the number of staff in the office has doubled – Naomi Popple, an Ambitious Futures graduate trainee from the University of York came to Brussels for a two month placement before heading back to York to finish her trainee programme and then moving onto her PhD at the University of Leeds.

New Japanese university office in Brussels, EU referendum discussions and TDM and copyright
Waseda University is a private university based in Tokyo, Japan. Waseda hosts the EU institute in Japan and earlier this month, the ULB opened its Asian office in Waseda as well. The opening of the office coincides with 150 years of Belgium-Japan diplomatic relations and also 20 years of collaboration between Waseda and ULB (Universite Libre de Bruxelles).

Official office launch and the Dutch Presidency Open Science conference
Last week we held the official launch event of the White Rose Brussels Office. The launch event was actually two separate events, the first was an evening reception at the British Residence, with speeches from the British Ambassador to Belgium, Alison Rose, the vice-chancellor of the University of Leeds, Professor Sir Alan Langlands and myself, followed by networking and canapes. There was a good number of European Commission officials at the event, including Robert Madelin, Policy Advisor on Innovation and a good turnout from alumni of the 3 universities based in Belgium.

New White Rose Brussels Office, launch event and new PVC for International at Leeds
This week I received the keys to the premises of the new White Rose Brussels office. The office is situated on Rue du Luxembourg, very close to Trône metro station and five minutes walk from the European Parliament and European Commission buildings.
